Resumo

O projeto pretende gerar conhecimento sobre a sistemática de medusas, focando em aspectos morfológicos e utilizando-se de ferramentas moleculares. Estudos do ciclo de vida e dados da biologia das espécies também serão abordados, uma vez que possibilitam adicionar informações para a identificação e compreensão dos papeis das medusas no ambiente marinho (blooms/outbreaks, cadeias tróficas). As medusas atraem o homem por sua beleza e o afastam por sua capacidade de causar acidentes. O estudo dos padrões evolutivos (compreendido através das relações de parentesco) dentro deste grupo pode permitir decidir quais espécies podem vir a ser exploradas em diversos sentidos (p.ex. no estudo das toxinas). Não obstante ainda existe uma lacuna, no conhecimento da fauna destes invertebrados, em determinadas áreas do litoral brasileiro e do mundo. Assim, quaisquer estudos em muito contribuirão com o conhecimento da biodiversidade de cnidários. O diferencial do projeto encontra-se em utilizar a integração destas informações [diversidade específica, ciclo de vida, biologia, morfologia detalhada das espécies, dados moleculares] para diagnosticar e definir as espécies.
