Strategy for the release and commercialization of the predator Orius insidiosus (say) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae)

Abstract

Biological control is an alternative method of pest control that uses natural and / or entomopathogenic enemies; such a method of control has been developing in a vertiginous way in the modern world, because it is less aggressive to the environment and to man, since it does not present the negative effects of pesticides. In Brazil this method of control is a reality, large areas have been treated with biological control agents, but given the proportions of agriculture practiced in Brazil, such areas represent less than 1% of the area cultivated in the country. Among the biological control agents used in Brazil are the parasitoids (Trichogramma sp. And Cotesia flavipes), the entomopathogens (Beauveria bassiana, Metarrhyzium anysoplae and Baculovirus), and the predatory agents, of which the most used belong to the subphylum Acari . Few or virtually no predatory insects are used on a commercial scale in Brazil. The present proposal will address issues for the efficient rearing and release of O. insidiosus for pest control, taking into account the oviposition substrate that best meets the demand, diapause related issues, release of the predator, as the number of release points in a given area, the number of predators at each released point, to obtain effective control and also the best conditions for the storage and commercialization of Orius insidiosus, a generalist predator already used commercially in other countries.
