Impacts of the Photoinhibition of Photosystem I and its Photoprotective Mechanisms on the Photosynthetic Efficiency

Abstract

Photosynthesis is the key process for converting light energy into chemical energy, sustaining most of the planet's trophic chain. Today, agricultural systems are under tremendous pressure due to increases in world population, demand for food, scarcity of space, consumption and the need for new energy matrices. Particularly, with the current scenario of climate change, agricultural production must suffer with its efficiency and growth, especially in developing countries. Thus, the understanding of photosynthesys and photoprotective mechanisms are crucial and strategic. Several groups have studied the importance of photoinhibition of photosystem II (PSII). However, studies regarding photoinhibition of photosystem I and its photoprotective mechanisms are scarce. Therefore, this proposal has the main objective to evaluate and elucidate the role of photoinhibition of PSI, as well as its photoprotective mechanisms. As an experimental model, leaves of rice (Oryza sativa L.), physic nut (Jatropha curcas) and castor bean (Ricinus communis) with different degrees of photoinhibition of PSI will be used. Gas exchanges, chlorophyll a fluorescence, NIR absorbance, high resolution kinetics of PSI and PSII, enzymatic activities and key proteins of the electron transport chain of the chloroplast by westernblots will be evaluated. This knowledge will make possible the selection of genotypes and cultivars more tolerant to abiotic stresses, as well as better photosynthetic efficiency (AU)
