Abstract

The aim of this research is to, in light of the events of 1968, review the different accounts that emerge in the celebrations of this unpaired year. In a former study entitled "1968: o diálogo é a violência - movimento estudantil e ditadura militar" I've reconstructed the main events set off by the student movement from the mainstream press, students and military records. In a recent research I've analyzed the media outcome of 1968, particularly through the review of articles published in O Estado de S. Paulo and Folha de S. Paulo newspapers and in the Veja magazine during the thirty and forty years celebrations of 1968. Thereby, I've been able to establish a comparison between the mainstream media reports in the heat of the moment with the (new) versions built during the 68 celebrations in the ensuing decades. Now I propose the analysis of 1968 through the literature review that was published during the events organized during its celebrations. In light of the critical theory, particularly what was argued by Debord and Marcuse, we seek to analyze if only the media repercussion is directed by the principles of the society of the spectacle in opposition to academic literature or if there are also, in academic literature, characteristics of the society of the spectacle, the cultural industry and the closing of the universe of discourse, in a sense that they are able to explain the silencing and/or the heritage of 1968 in Brazil (AU)
