Abstract

The natural resource that suffers most from the pressure of population and economic advancement is the water resource, motivated by exploratory and irrational use. Even in regions of the country where water availability has historically been elevated, with the advancement of economic and social uses, water has become scarcer. Considering the lack and/or inefficacy of water resources management in Brazil, besides the inexistence of methods that express the reality of the watersheds, this project intends to discuss the issue, evaluate and propose new instruments related to water availability that may contribute to the sustainable management of watersheds. The study will be carried out in the watershed of the Piracicaba River, in the state of São Paulo. The project proposes to evaluate results of the determination of the reference flows obtained by traditional analytical methods and compare them with actual measurements performed in sub-basins and produce cartographic documents on the subject of water availability, seeking to contribute to the decision-making for proper management. The investigations and data preparation will take place in three stages: preparation of a georeferenced database of the two watersheds; choice of sub-basins study objects, using statistical procedures; survey of new data, through fieldwork, monitoring and operational processing in GIS, with the use of remote sensing techniques.
