Abstract

The Serra da Mantiqueira Range is one of the most important environmental preservation areas of the world, and for the water resources management in Brazil. Despite this importance, there is a lack of knowledge about its hydrological behavior. The objective of this project is to contribute to the understanding of the hydrology of the Serra da Mantiqueira Environmental Protection Area, through the study of the spatial and temporal variability of precipitation, and the study of the orographic influence of the Mantiqueira Range over this hydrological process. Besides that, the possible connections between the temporal variability of precipitation and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation will be investigated. These objectives will be achieved through the use of analysis of variance, hierarchical clustering, linear regression and the Standardized Precipitation Index. The results of the research will establish a baseline on precipitation in the Serra da Mantiqueira Environmental Protection Area, which may support future hydrological and ecological research on the region, as well as the sustainable water resources management in its watersheds.
