Abstract
This research project deals with the recent changes in mainstream economics from the standpoint of critical realism, which is surveyed in section 1. Such changes include a wide range of economic theorization and research approaches (e.g. behavioural economics, experimental economics, neuroeconomics, evolutionary economics and computational economics (the latter, very varied in kind). As a whole, do these new approaches point to greater ontological awareness by economistas? What are the ontological assumptions or commitments and implications for theoretical and apllied economics deriving from these approaches? These questions are unfolded in a range of topics, such as (1) the nature of economic theories (orthodox, heterodox, mainstream; (2) methodological pluralism; (3) theorizing, modelling and reality relationships in economics; (4) the performativity thesis and modern macroeconomics; (5) ontological assumptions and implications of some heteorodox schools, such as institutional economics and evolutionary economics.
