Abstract
This proposal aims to improve our understanding of rotational diffusion in colloidal glasses. Specifically, first we plan to develop simple strategies for the synthesis of colloidal clusters and other non-spherical colloidal particles. Subsequently, we plan to perform fundamental investigations of rotational diffusion in colloidal glasses by optical microscopy and simulations. These investigations include the characterization of rotational and translational diffusion decoupling, and how tracer motion relates to background particle motions. In particular, we plan to obtain proof of principle data related to tracer shape/size, obtain proof of principle data on correlations between tracers, and determine feasibility of making a glass of pure clusters.
