Abstract

A bacterial isolate belonging to the genus Burkholderia caused 100% mortality in Spodoptera frugiperda. In our studies of this bacterium, it was revealed that the responsible toxin is secreted to the culture medium, of non-protein nature and with high thermal resistance, therefore, the presence of viable bacterial cells is not necessary for its effect. These characteristics, when compared to the biodefensives that require the application of the living microorganism, bring advantages in relation to the formulation, storage, transport and application by the already used spray equipment. However, in view of the need for intellectual protection (patent) and commercial registration of such a product, it is necessary to identify the metabolite responsible for this activity. Thus, in this project will be carried out bacterial culture and obtaining the supernatant, extraction of the supernatant metabolites and obtaining the dry extract, purification of the active molecule by successive biomonitored chromatographs, structural identification of the molecule, search for information in scientific and patent literature. the molecule, lethal concentration determination capable of killing 50 and 90% (LC50) and (LC90). By obtaining this information it will be possible to start the process of requesting intellectual protection and proceed with the other requirements for commercial registration. Regarding the biocontrol market, it is noteworthy that worldwide there are annual increases of 17% and even greater in the Brazilian market. In Brazil, for commercial use based on bacterial pest biocontrol, there is only one registered species, Bacillus thuringiensis, which has the domain of the bioinsecticide segment. As a result, new species / products with distinct characteristics have the potential for high acceptance in a still concentrated market, generate revenues and contribute to the success of the segment.
