Abstract

Wetlands are topographical depressions naturally developed in watershed positions and in different lithologies. They are characterized by hydromorphic soils with a high concentration of organic matter and a high water table. They provide fundamental environmental services, such as the slow recharge of aquifers and regulation of river flow in periods of drought, in addition to contributing to regulate the local and regional climate. Intensive agricultural activities in the São Paulo State Peripheral Depression results in the impact or suppression of wetlands through the release of agrochemicals in sugarcane crops and the shaping of land for planting. In view of the growing social function of aquifers and the environmental sensitivity of wetlands as recharge zones and direct access to aquifers, studies that aim to understand these systems are essential for an adequate management of the land with a focus to its preservation. It is undeniable the importance of the sugarcane agribusiness for the State's economy, an activity that has intrinsic environmental impacts and that must be standardized and inspected by environmental agencies. One of the functions of this project is the generation of scientific data that demonstrates the importance and sensitivity of wetlands, and provides technical and scientific subsidies in the development of management instruments and more-adequate suggestions of land use. In this sense, this project aims to study the wetlands of top slopes in the S. Paulo State Peripheral Depression (region of Ipeúna and Cordeirópolis), through the integration of aerial images obtained by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), detailed geophysical surveys, chemical and physical soil analysis and water and sediment quality analysis.
