Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate tendon, ligaments and cardiac alterations in horses submitted to treadmill training guided by lactate concentration using elastography and echocardiography applying stress tests (Tstress). In addition, evaluations of biochemical and metabolic variables will be carried out. Twelve Arabian horses will be used, males or females aged between three or four years old from a local farm. Clinical examination and a complete blood count will be performed to identify healthy individuals. Prior to the Progressive Effort Test (PET) the horses will pass to the treadmill acclimation. The PET velocity will be determined when lactate e 4 mmol/L concentration. A 3 mL of venous blood will be collected in heparin tube for pH, pCO2, HCO3-, BE, Na+, K+, Cl-, lactate and osmolality measurements by hemogasometry and another 3 mL of blood will be collected in tubes containing EDTA for total protein and troponin I measurement. The procedures will consist of: PET, six weeks of training, PET and after three weeks of rest will be the Tstress. Before and after each step will be performed ultrasonography (B-mode) and compression elastography (EVUS 8, Saevo®, Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brasil) of superficial digital flexor tendons, check and suspensory ligaments; electrocardiography and echocardiography (MyLab 30 Vet Gold, Esaote, Itália). Echocardiography measurements will be analyzed in B-mode, M-mode, Pulsed-wave Doppler and Tissue Doppler. The results obtained will be assayed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the means will be compared by Tukey test at the 5% level. The SAS Systems will be used (Statistical Analysis System, 1995).
