Metal/ceramic joining by brazing and by solida state diffusion

Abstract

The development of processes of ceramic-metal joining is an important requisite for the commercial use of advanced ceramics. The present project focuses on three different materials, Al2O3, SiC and AlN and aims to study processes of brazing and bonding in solid state. The themes to be treated can be enumerated as follows: 1) study of the interface reactions, from the thermodynamic and kinetic point of view; 2) mathematical analysis of the residual tensions from thermal contraction, and of experimental development of tension alleviating interlayers; 3) evaluation of the mechanical properties of the joints by four-point flexion. The broad objective of the program is the establishment of a scientific treatment of the variables of the process of ceramic-metal joining, with a view to establishing a future technology. (AU)
