Genomic selection and genome wide association (GS-GWAS) applied to the genetic breeding of grape for juice

Abstract

The State of São Paulo has the potential to produce grapes with excellent quality for the elaboration of juice, a market that has shown a significant expansion in the last 15 years. There is an urgent need for the implementation of biotechnology techniques in a breeding program to quickly provide to producers options of new cultivars with an aptitude for processing where the ultimate goal is juice. We propose the study of new selection methodologies: Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) and Genomic Selection (GS), which use genomic marker data to aid in the identification of genes and superior genotypes, respectively. In order to explore the relevance of these methods, we will use 288 genotypes from the Germplasm Bank of the Instituto Agronômico de Campinas (IAC). In the present work, we will evaluate the performance of GS and GWAS for grapevine culture to evaluate the potential of these approaches to explain heritability, to detect significant associations, and to predict phenotypes of growth traits. GS-GWAS expectations are high for the genetic improvement of the grapevine since it opens a concrete perspective of making direct selection with the expectation of increasing the genetic gain per unit of time and reducing the time necessary for the selection of superior genotypes.
