Abstract

Understanding morpho-functional relationships of Gnathostomata ('jawed vertebrates') mandibles (lower jaws) is imperative to understand the role of food on species diversification and specialization to challenging environments. This proposal aims to establish a world-first investigation of biomechanical implications of Gnathostomata feeding behaviour and diet using a phylogenetic framework. Employing a novel multipronged approach integrating bioengineering (Monash-Australia) and shape analysis (USP-Brazil) in a wide range of species, from sharks to mammals, we will show how jaw anatomy coincides with major evolutionary events in the evolution of jawed vertebrates. Results will enhance our understanding on how jaw shape and function coevolve in this ecologically diversified clade. This international partnership also represents a unique opportunity for knowledge exchange between labs and for training scientists from different countries in advanced techniques and modern analyses.
