Abstract

Since the early years after the Butantan Institute foundation, then Serumtherápico, its director board has faced the necessity of providing primary schooling for the children of employees and families in the surroundings, as well as training future workers for the institution. In 1933 the old school, named Escola Isolada Mista de Butantan, was renamed Grupo Escolar Rural de Butantan, to start a new pedagogical project earmarked for education for the country work, assuming, in this way, an ideology of the movement known as "ruralization of the education", aimed at the training of the "countryman", constituted in consonance with the developmental project of the Vargas Era. Due to the pedagogical practice developed in the Grupo de Butantan and the political relationships established by its director, Noêmia Cruz, the work put in practice in the Grupo Escolar de Butantan has become a reference for the establishment of other rural schools in Brazil. The location of the Group within a research institute focused on public health brings specificities that are the object of this project. The research will use a qualitative approach and documentary character and aims to understand the relations established between the Butantan Institute and the Rural School Group in its political-administrative and pedagogical aspects. Primary documentary sources related to the School Group that are under the custody of the Butantan Institute Memory Center (Rural School Fund) will be analyzed, as well as in other collections and funds. In addition, it is intended - through community communication strategies - to run out a document prospection with the families of former students to expand the institutional collection and guarantee the preservation of these documents.
