Astaxanthin concentration: development and evaluation of the cultivation from microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis for the extraction of carotenoid (astaxanthin) to meet on demand of aquaculture

Abstract

Microalgae production can be key role in the aquaculture market in the world. In Brazil, some species of microalgae of commercial interest are still poorly explored or are only produced on small laboratory scale. The aquaculture area basically depends on these nutrients and products, which drive the growth of the national market. The mastery in the cultivation of different species of microalgae has become a fundamental element in the food supplement to diversify the production of new fish species. Among the species of commercial interest, the large Haematococcus pluvialis stands out, microalgae with great biotechnological potential due to its ability to compose a high commercial value (natural Astaxantin) a carotenoid with high antioxidant action and with wide applications in antioxidant technologies in animal nutrition and human, chemical, cosmetics and aquaculture. One of the major obstacles is not the domain to acquire an extensive biomass. In this way, the company AquaSmart, pre-established in the field of aquarium hobby, has been investing in the development of technical products and procedures for the creation of new biotechnological food-based fish species and invertebrate cultivation. It has already 14 years old in the marine ornamental market during its experience in hosting scientific studies. The current structure of the company with more than 200 arrays of ornamental fish, a growth area, a quarantine area and a laboratory equipped for research development. Thus, the dominance in the cultivation of some species of microalgae and "know-how" for small-scale production is already established. The proposal aims to achieve a supply-supply system for a future large-scale production of H. pluvialis and, consequently, Astaxantin. (AU)
