Abstract

In the early 19th century, Geology was a new, exciting, and fashionable science. It was experiencing its first and most significant explosion of conceptual innovation, empirical expansion, public approval, and interest. (Rudwick 1985b) Literature concerning the History of Geological and Earth Sciences recognizes and emphasizes the relevance of the Société Géologique de France (SGF) as well as its British counterpart (the Geological Society of London - GSL) in the construction of modern geological sciences throughout the 19th century, particularly in its golden age, also called the "Golden Age," which covers approximately the first half of this century. The current project aims to identify and analyze the so-called "hot topics" - "hot topics" - that emerged in the scientific production and debates in these specific institutions or that also appeared on the pages of other relevant journals. These institutions constituted authentic "scientific arenas" where cultures, scientific ideas and practices were confronted, and "sages," specialists, and amateurs clashed with each other. It is assumed as a working hypothesis that both associations - SGF and GSL -far from being mere spaces of academic and personal prestige, and in addition to places of sociability, constituted central institutional loci for the consolidation of modern geological sciences. The central objective of this project is to carry out a systematic survey of the themes discussed at meetings of the Geological Society of London (GSL) and the Société Géologique de France (SGF) and published both in their journals throughout the 19th century especially in its golden age, as well as in books and manuals.
