Fabrication and photoelectrochemical characterization of anodic oxide coatings by anodization of self-passivating metals

Abstract

The mainstream of this project addresses the manufacturing and modification of properties of anodic oxides films prepared via anodization of auto-passivating metals (Zr, Ti, Al, Nb, Ta, V, and W), particularly Al, Cu, Ti, and Nb. The main feature of these metals is to form a thick oxide film with high electrical and mechanical resistance during the anodic polarization. The electrolyte composition during the surface treatment allows the production of anodic oxide coatings with different properties depending on the chemical elements present in the electrolyte and the experimental parameters' conditions. This project explores several experimental parameters related to the manufacture of these films to improve their properties for heterogeneous photocatalysis, among which (i) the exploration of the experimental conditions for the production and characterization of Al, Ti, and Nb metal oxides using the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) technique (anodization in conditions of dielectric breakdown), (ii) the modification of its properties using anodic doping of specific active elements and (iii) the surface coating containing specific metallic nanoparticles to achieve photo-electro-activity in different medium conditions. It is planned to perform the morphological, electronic, and optical characterization of the coatings to elucidate the properties and effects of different synthetic parameters. The electronic and photoelectrochemical characterization of the coatings will bring details about the mechanism of photoelectronic processes allowing the design of a photo-active-potential map addressing the possibilities of applying the new material for photo-oxidation or photo-reduction transformation. At the end of the project, it is expected to draw different synthetic routes to produce anodic oxide coatings applied in different technological fields, such as advanced oxide coatings preparation for heterogeneous photocatalysis.
