Abstract

The present project aims to develop a new electrocatalytic methodology for the oxidation of glycerol and similar polyols in products with higher added value. The proposed electrochemical system consists of using molecules with high power of homogeneous catalysis that are regenerated on the electrode surface forming the indirect electrocatalysis cycle. These molecules, known as mediators, can overcome some of the main problems that prevent the application of the electrochemical transformation of glycerol on an industrial scale, such as the cost of metallic electrocatalysts, low control of the selectivity of the products formed and high energy expenditure required for these reactions. The development of the project is designed to occur in two main areas: (i) Fundamental Electrosynthesis: Finding the optimal conditions for the indirect electrocatalysis of glycerol and other similar alcohols, identifying the products via analytical techniques. (ii) Spectroelectrochemistry: with optimized electrochemical parameters, evaluate by spectroscopic techniques (Raman and UV-vis) in order to elucidate the possible mechanisms of this reaction. (AU)
