Abstract

The gut microbiota and the innate and adaptive immune systems within the gastrointestinal tract are major contributors to host health, but their functional interactions within sex and across the lifespan remain incompletely defined. Defining the mechanisms by which gut microbial metabolites regulate host gut immune responses will improve our understanding of how to better leverage the gut and identify novel therapeutic interventions and targets for healthy aging. This grant aims to define the sex-specific baseline differences in levels of gut microbial metabolites and immunometabolic phenotypes and function of intestinal immune cells in young and aged mice. A multi-disciplinary team of basic science investigators from UNICAMP (Brazil) and the HNRCA/Tufts University (USA) will intersect cutting-edge tools, novel rodent and cell-based assays, and high-dimensional omics analysis to advance our understanding of how gut microbe-host immune interactions regulate host aging processes.
