Biology, ecology and systematics of Sea-anemones lato sensu (Anthozoa, Actiniaria and Ceriantharia) in Atlantic Ocean

Abstract

Sea anemones are widely considered to be very relevant animals as biological models in different environments, especially because they are benthic and solitary organisms, characteristics that facilitate laboratory experimentation. Despite being found in all marine environments, knowledge about ecobiological processes of most species is focused on model organisms from areas of the Northern Hemisphere. On the coast of the Atlantic Ocean of Latin America, knowledge about the species is still quite incipient. Some species in Actiniaria and Ceriantharia were studied, but with very restricted emphases and without continuity. This inconsistency of studies leads to the absence of model species that serve as a basis for different approaches, including areas of applied science. Thus, the present study aims to characterize and explore the diversity of sea anemones lato sensu (Actiniaria and Ceriantharia) especially in the Atlantic Ocean in view of the characterization of model species and establishment of study protocols with these organisms. For this, the project is divided into five subprojects with different approaches ranging from the characterization of species to application in the experimentation against cancer cells. In this way, we hope to advance a lot in the study of these groups and tie international research groups in the area. (AU)
