Abstract

Super austenitic stainless steels are extensively used in offshore, oil and gas, and chemical industry applications, owing to their exceptional combination of corrosion resistance and high performance. In many such applications, a cladding process is employed to minimize manufacturing costs. This involves depositing a more noble material, such as super austenitic stainless steel, onto a less noble material, like low carbon steel. Electric arc welding is typically used to clad stainless steels, with the GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) process being a popular choice. The objective of this research project is to modify the conventional GTAW process by implementing technological adaptations and optimizing the welding/cladding parameters to achieve a clad layer of super austenitic stainless steels (AISI 904L) on low carbon steels (ASTM A516 Grade 70), which exhibit excellent mechanical and corrosion resistance properties, as well as good productivity. The clad layers will be evaluated using macro and microstructural characterization, mechanical characterization, and corrosion resistance tests. The results of this research will enable the GTAW process to be applied in the oil and gas industry, expanding the application of the cladding process. (AU)
