Abstract

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state welding process that joins two pieces of metal without melting the materials, whether they are identical or dissimilar. This process has proven to be quite versatile in its applications, as it can be used to weld polymers to materials with high hardness. For the process to be applicable, it is necessary to have full control of the variables, such as the shape, rotation, feed rate, tilt angle, and penetration of the tool. This project aims to primarily evaluate the entry angle of the FSW tool in lap copper and brass sheets. The tests will be carried out on a 5-axis CNC machining center of the Pinnacle model AX450. The top temperature will be acquired through a Flir TG297 Thermal Camera, and at the base of the samples through K-type thermocouples. With this, it will be possible to draw a correlation between the influence of the tool angle on the rotation and feed rate of the process, the heat input, the microstructural characteristics, and the mechanical properties of the weld bead. The results will also help to expand the use of the FSW process in industry. (AU)
