Renovation of CNPEM's Central Data Processing, Storage, and Connectivity Infrastructure

Abstract

Scientific research is an essential pillar for the advancement of society, and the National Center for Energy and Materials Research (CNPEM) plays a fundamental role in this quest for knowledge. However, to propel scientific and technological progress, a robust and adaptable technological infrastructure is necessary.Currently, CNPEM faces challenges related to the capacity of its technological infrastructure, which can directly impact the quality and efficiency of the research conducted on its premises. Connectivity, processing, and data storage form the backbone of this infrastructure, and to ensure that CNPEM remains at the forefront of the research conducted within it, it is imperative to make improvements in its data processing and storage capacity, as well as in the central connectivity of this infrastructure. This project aims at the central objective of modernizing and expanding CNPEM's technological infrastructure, focusing on the acquisition of servers and storage. Such equipment serves as the foundation for a wide range of scientific and technological activities carried out at the Center, from hosting virtual servers that power critical systems to the secure and accessible storage of research data. The request for the acquisition of servers aims to replace and expand the existing computational capacity, which is already operating beyond its upgrade capacity, with support nearing its end. This will provide more scalability and flexibility to accommodate the growing demands of research projects. The need for a new high-capacity and high-performance storage arises from the expansion of the volume of data generated by CNPEM's research. Storing, accessing, and sharing this data securely and efficiently are crucial for the progress of research. Thus, this storage is essential to meet the demands of research projects, providing a stable and continuous network experience for researchers. The project seeks to align CNPEM's technological capabilities with the growing demands of scientific and technological research from the scientific community that utilizes its facilities, driving innovation, collaboration, and effectiveness in all areas to which CNPEM is dedicated. By successfully concluding this initiative, the Center will remain well-positioned to continue its mission of contributing significantly to the advancement of scientific and technological development and supporting innovation in energy, materials, and biosciences, both in Brazil and worldwide.
