Abstract

The PDEs (Partial Differential Equations) on the Sphere workshop is a workshop that takes places once every 1.5 to 2 years aiming to gather worldwide researchers working with numerical solution techniques on modern and emerging computer architectures of the partial differential equations (PDEs) that govern weather, climate and ocean circulation. It has been held since 1990, mostly moving between European and North American locations. For 2025, it is planned to be held in São Paulo, Brazil, therefore happening for the first time in the South Hemisphere. Particular topics of interest of the workshop, related to numerical solutions for weather, climate and ocean dynamics, include: dynamical core formulation, coupling between equations and with sub-grid scale parametrisations, high-performance computing, test cases, equation sets, machine learning. Usually, the workshop has around 50 to 100 attendees, coming from all parts of the world, but mostly Europe, North America and Asia. It gathers prominent speakers from leading universities and laboratories, as well as national weather and climate operational centres. The 2025 event will be hosted by the University of São Paulo (USP), in collaboration with the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE), the institution responsible for providing numerical weather, climate and environmental forecasts for Brazil and head of the Model for Ocean-laNd-Atmosphere predictioN (MONAN) initiative.
