Implementation of research in economic evaluation in health: cost-of-illness, utility measures and statistical methods

Abstract

Economic evaluations have been increasingly conducted in Brazil to support healthcare decision-making processes. The quality of these studies is considered satisfactory. However, improvements are needed mainly in the methods used to estimate costs and effect measures (such as health-related quality of life), as well as in the statistical methods used in economic evaluations. Therefore, the development of new health technology assessment centers in Brazil is relevant for conducting research on this topic. Thus, the main objective of this research project will be to implement a research group on health economic evaluation in a public institution with a tradition in research to develop: 1) a health economic evaluation discipline with the objective of expanding the knowledge of researchers and students on health economic evaluations, and expanding publications of high-quality economic evaluations conducted in Brazil; 2) cost of illness studies to provide data on healthcare costs for Coronavirus 19 and osteoarthritis from the perspective of the Brazilian Public Healthcare System; 3) valuation studies to provide a mapping method and a value-set to estimate utility for the EQ-5D-5L for the Brazilian population, comparing different methods of measuring EQ-5D utility values between different populations (Brazilian, European and Latin American); 4) methodological studies to assess the measurement properties of the EQ-5D-5L, as well as the comparison between different instruments used to estimate utility values; and 5) a methodological study to compare statistical methods used in economic evaluations to identify the best statistical approach.
