Center for Science for Development - Assistive Technology and Accessibility in Libras

Abstract

The Center for Science for Development - Assistive Technology and Accessibility in Libras (CCD-TAAL) is a multidisciplinary effort involving researchers from the State University of Campinas (Universidade Estadual de Campinas), University of São Paulo (Universidade de São Paulo), Federal University of São Carlos (Universidade Federal de São Carlos), and the Institute of Technological Research (Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas) in partnership with the State Secretariat for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The CCD-TAAL seeks to advance the development of solutions to reduce the communication barriers between the deaf and hearing communities. The CCD-TAAL proposes to face this challenge by focusing on developing approaches for automatically translating Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) into Portuguese and vice versa, exploring modern machine learning techniques based on deep neural networks. This mission aligns with the strategic theme proposed in the FAPESP Call for Proposals, which seeks a research project on artificial intelligence to make Libras accessible. (AU)
