Abstract

This research project is based on questions that emerged from the knowledge about port work during the analysis of data from previous research: Port Modernization Process in Santos: implications for the health and illness of workers, "Investigation of Work-Related Accidents and Diseases in the Port of Santos between 2009 - 2013" and "Work and Health of Port Workers in Lisbon: a comparative study with the Port of Santos-Brazil". developed at the Federal University of São Paulo-UNIFESP-Campus Baixada Santista-Brazil. These studies identified the need to delve deeper into elements of work related to working hours in the world's ports, looking at the relationship with working conditions, work organization and fatigue in ports. The process of modernizing ports in the globalized world has transformed working hours, forms of work organization and working conditions, introducing new technologies that coexist with old ones. The changes underway have repercussions on port workers' experiences of health and illness, particularly fatigue. Working hours and the use of overtime, structured by employers, have increased in recent decades around the world in response to the intensification of competition resulting from economic globalization. Working hours in ports are long, resulting in an increased risk of adverse health events. The elements presented are taken as the object of investigation. (AU)
