Scientific EMU Project: Acquisition of High-Resolution Ultrasound Equipment for Small Animals

Abstract

Small animal models play a crucial role in biomedical research, especially in the areas of cardiology, oncology and developmental biology. The acquisition of high-resolution Ultrasound Equipment promises to position the State of São Paulo as an outstanding leader in the scientific scenario, both nationally and continentally. It is expected that this will also increase the international competitiveness of research carried out in these areas. This advancement is possible thanks to ultrasound's ability to provide the scientific community with an essential tool for the in vivo and real-time analysis of a wide range of biological events, both structural and dynamic. With this equipment, it will be feasible to carry out in-depth studies on biological processes, including intrauterine morphological and functional changes and in adult animal systems, such as the cardiovascular and renal systems, in different contexts and applications. For basic research, the equipment will open new avenues, allowing more accurate assessments of the physiology of major organs in rodents and other small animals. Furthermore, ultrasound has the potential to revolutionize the field of pharmaceutical development. It will facilitate studies on new medicines and innovative applications of existing drugs, thanks to its ability to provide detailed and chronological information on pharmacological action in in vivo trials in a non-invasive and repetitive manner. In translational research, areas such as bioengineering and tissue and organ transplants will benefit enormously. The implementation of this multi-user installation will make it possible to transplant cells and inject scaffolds or biomimetics, with direct visualization, in addition to monitoring the results of these procedures over hours, days and months. Therefore, there is high demand and expectation surrounding the use of the High Resolution Ultrasound. It is anticipated to become a key tool in several areas of research, significantly boosting scientific progress and innovation. (AU)
