Abstract

Fluorescence microscopy is a powerful tool for morphological studies. It allows differential visualization of any tissue, cell, or molecule that has been labeled with fluorescent compounds. This technique has led to major advances in morphology and has been used in biomedical research for decades. However, its use by anatomists and systematists studying biodiversity is still incipient, especially in Brazil. In order to make a qualitative leap in the morphological studies carried out in this area and to open doors to new lines of research, we request a Zeiss Axio Zoom.V16 fluorescence zoom microscope for large fields equipped with an Apotome 3 optical sectioning device. This equipment allows the analysis of relatively large samples while eliminating background interference caused by fluorescent structures outside the focal plane through optical sectioning. The high numerical aperture of its objectives provides approximately twice the optical resolution and light collection of conventional high-end stereomicroscopes. Because of its applicability to multiple areas of the life sciences, the equipment will be useful to several research institutions in the state. Given the multi-user nature of the microscope, its acquisition can connect diverse research groups, fostering the production of multidisciplinary studies. (AU)
