Study of the hydration kinetics of Portland cement pastes mixed with bamboo leaf ash using impedance spectroscopy.

Abstract

In the scenario of global concern about the environment and technology, bamboo leaf ash (BLA) has been gaining highlight as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) to Portland cement. However, the understanding of the hydration reactions of Portland cement with the insertion of BLA is still poorly understood. BLA modifies the extent and hydration reactions and changes the fresh and hardened properties of the cementitious material. In addition to the incorporation of an SCM, another factor that can considerably influence the hydration reactions of Portland cement is the curing temperature. Thus, the use of sensitive techniques, such as impedance spectroscopy (EI), presents itself as a powerful non-destructive technique to understand the complex in-situ hydration reactions of cementitious materials. In this sense, this project aims to study the influence of BLA and temperature on the hydration process of Portland cement pastes through electrical conductivity curves obtained from IS. In an innovative way, we seek to understand the mechanisms that govern the physico-chemical kinetics of hydration of Portland cement pastes, as well as the influence of BLA on the physico-chemical kinetics from IS, a fact that has not yet been developed. The techniques of thermogravimetry (TG/DTG), x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), compressive strength and Vicat test will be used for complementation. In addition to the innovative aspects mentioned, this project aims to provide adequate disposal for bamboo leaf ash and aggregate technological value to this waste, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions caused for the use of Portland cement and development of a more sustainable cementitious material.
