Classification and Taxonomy of the 'Cydnoide' Complex (Hemiptera: Pentatomoidea): phylogeny of Cydnidae Bilberg; review of the genus Pangaeus Stal; description of new species of Amnestus Dallas; illustrated key to the genera of Thyreocoridae from Brazil.

Abstract

Cydnidae is a family of insects that includes burrowing bugs among its species. All cydnidae are considered phytophagous and polyphagous, living on or near the soil, in different types of habitats. In recent years, reports of burrowing bug species as agricultural pests have increased. However, the classification of Cydnidae is still unstable and widely debated in recent literature, and knowledge of diversity in Brazil is hampered by the lack of current studies on the taxonomy of this group of insects. To address these gaps in knowledge, four research projects at different academic levels are proposed, in addition to technical support to develop curation of specimens and the information available in biological collections. Studies on Systematics and Classification of Cydnidae and related taxa will be developed based on data type, methods and tools currently used in these areas of knowledge. An important part of the project is the investment in training of graduate and undergrad students in Taxonomy. Most of the material needed for the studies is already available, which will be supplemented by requests for loans, field trips and visits to collections in Brazil and abroad. (AU)
