Abstract

The class Diplopoda is represented by approximately 11,000 described species worldwide, of which only 6% are known from Brazil. This underrepresentation results from a shortage of specialists, an accumulation of unidentified material in collections, and insufficient sampling efforts. The order Spirostreptida, one of the most species-rich groups within the class and predominantly Gondwanan in distribution, is notable for its low dispersal ability, high levels of endemism, and ecological role as detritivores. This project is based on the recognition that most Brazilian Spirostreptida species still lack essential information on their distribution, diversity, and conservation status. Of the few species that have been assessed, most are classified as "data deficient," although many may be critically endangered. At least 26 genera of the order are estimated to occur in Brazil, with Pseudonannolene being the only one revised to date. This proposal aims to deepen the taxonomic, phylogenetic, and biogeographic knowledge of Spirostreptida genera in Brazil, helping to fill critical gaps in our understanding of the national fauna and supporting the development of effective conservation strategies.
