Risk Management, Reliability and Sustainability in Oil, Natural Gas and Renewable Energy Exploration and Production

Abstract

The Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) reaffirms its commitment as a public higher education institution, based on the tripod of teaching, research, and extension. One of its main efforts is focused on human resource training and technological development for the oil, natural gas, renewable energy, and biofuels sectors, as well as environmental impact mitigation. This proposal aims at the renewal and revision of PRH-ANP-FAPESP-38.1, which, after the RAA-2024 evaluation, achieved third place among the 54 active programs, making it eligible for continuation for another five years. The program will remain headquartered at CEERMA-UFPE (https://ceerma.org/).The revision of PRH-38.1 is based on the experiences acquired in the last cycle and the new technological demands of the sector, promoting updates and scientific enhancements aligned with the new call for proposals. To this end, the revision includes:Expansion of the academic scope, with the inclusion of new courses, disciplines, and advisors, further strengthening the training of UFPE students.Program expansion, incorporating the following undergraduate courses:Production Engineering (Caruaru)Naval EngineeringControl and Automation EngineeringMechanical EngineeringStatisticsEnergy EngineeringThe inclusion of these courses reinforces the interdisciplinary approach of the program, reflecting the growing importance of fields such as risk analysis, reliability engineering, and environmental modeling for sustainable development and a fair and secure energy transition.Furthermore, this revision more than doubles the number of research areas originally approved in the 2018 call, adding seven new research focuses:Green hydrogenNuclear microgenerationQuantum computingPipeline integrity analysisPlatform decommissioning and production system dismantlingMarine pollutionIndustrial maintenance supported by digital twinsThis expansion strengthens the program's ability to address the technological challenges of the energy industry, while also increasing its visibility within UFPE, attracting top students and consolidating its relevance in the national R&D&I system.Another significant advancement was the creation of the Center for Synthesis in Environmental and Climate Changes (SiMAClim) in 2024. Headquartered at CEERMA, SiMAClim will serve as a strategic platform to enhance climate change research, further expanding PRH-ANP-38.1's scientific contributions in this area. Finally, the program reaffirms its commitment to a management approach aligned with the PRH-ANP-FAPESP User Manual, ensuring its continuous evolution and contribution to the advancement of the national energy industry.
