Abstract

Scientific research is one of the most important means of addressing strategic questions related to the various problems that arise daily. Nevertheless, due to the significance of petroleum in our daily lives, studies that focus on it as their primary subject are increasingly prominent in research institutions. Among these institutions, the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) is a major center where diverse scientific research activities are concentrated, with particular attention given to the petroleum sector. Therefore, maintaining the human resources training program in this field is essential to enhance the quality of research conducted at this institution. The Petroleum and Environmental Human Resources Program at the Federal University of Bahia (PEMA/UFBA) was created to train qualified human resources at both undergraduate and graduate levels, deepening knowledge in an integrated manner to meet the demands of the oil and natural gas sector. The program emphasizes strategic issues related to the environment and petroleum. PEMA/UFBA encompasses UFBA's undergraduate programs in Geology, Oceanography, Chemical Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering, as well as the graduate programs in Geochemistry: Petroleum and Environment (POSPETRO) and Chemical Engineering (PPEQ).In this context, it is important to highlight the graduate programs involved in this initiative. POSPETRO, from the Institute of Geosciences (IGEO), was created to address the need for developing a critical mass and deepening knowledge to assist in the integrated resolution of issues related to petroleum and the environment. Since its inception, it has been a significant hub for research development, aimed at training professionals with scientific expertise, distinguished by their excellence, facilitating their entry into the specialized job market. Between 2015 and 2018, POSPETRO coordinated the Petroleum and Environmental Human Resources Program of the Brazilian National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP), under the number 52 (PRH/ANP52), created to implement the public policy established in the Petroleum Law (No. 9.478/1997), which promotes research and the adoption of new technologies. In the second phase of PRH/ANP, program 52 was renumbered as 36.1, continuing its legacy of excellence and development.Alongside POSPETRO, PPEQ stands out as the first engineering graduate program in the state. Its creation was driven by the vision of strengthening regional technological development by training highly qualified human resources connected to regional and national development. Petroleum-related topics also play a crucial role in the program's projects, particularly in the areas of mature fields, fuels, biofuels, and alternative energy sources. Specifically, in the field of Mature Fields, PPEQ has contributed to the Field-School Project, projects on carbon dioxide sequestration, and flow assurance in wells. Notably, all PPEQ research lines can be directed toward the themes of this initiative.Aligned with the graduate programs, the undergraduate courses complement PEMA/UFBA, which has achieved significant results in line with its objectives: training specialized professionals for integration into the job market and developing new research for the sector regulated by the Brazilian National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP).
