BETWEEN EFFICIENCY AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: THE CONNECTION BETWEEN PRODUCTIVITY AND EMISSIONS IN AGRICULTURE

Abstract

In a context of growing concerns about climate change, Brazilian agriculture and livestock stand out for their dual role: driving productivity growth while significantly contributing to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Between 1990 and 2021, the sector became Brazil's second-largest emitter, responsible for about one-quarter of national emissions, second only to land-use and forest changes-processes often linked to agricultural activities. This research examines the relationship between total factor productivity (TFP) growth and GHG emissions in Brazil. It aims to measure productivity growth in as much detail as possible across crops and biomes, by including GHG emissions in the productivity measures. Using methods that link TFP changes to emission variations, the study also seeks to identify key socioeconomic factors influencing this relationship. Despite the urgency of aligning productivity gains with reduced environmental impacts, research on this topic remains scarce, exposing a critical gap in both Brazilian and global literature. (AU)
