Abstract

Three lines of research will be tackled which are connected by the fact that they represent new computational techniques in the context of iterative solution of inverse problems (PIs). Most effort will be applied to investigating the use of evolutive computing as a generic techniques for iterative solution of PIs, followed by an effort in the use of classic techniques, for example, in the proposition of new classical iterative solutions, or in the use of new methods of regularization; finally, in a fairly exploratory way, the potential will be evaluated of artificial neural networks in the context of PIs. We will seek to approach such lines in an integrated manner, so as to explore the complementarity between them, in particular looking for hybrid solutions between classic and evolutive techniques. The research will be centered on the resolution of a set of six real problems, of interest to INPE and of great economic relevance, pre-selected for the areas of Space Dynamics, Materials Science, Geophysics, Heat Transfer, Oceanography and Meteorology. From the knowledge obtained in tackling these problems, it is hoped to derive an iterative generic methodology to tackle inverse problems. (AU)
