Identification of new Cry genes based on isolates of the Bacillus thuringiensis bacteria using molecular biology methods and construction of transgenetic sugarcane plants

Abstract

This proposal aims to search for new codifying genes of crystal protein active on insects of the lepidoptera, diptera and coleoptera orders as well as representatives of the nematode order, which are agents considered pests of the principal cultivations of economic importance today. Initially molecular Biology techniques will be employed involving the use of molecular markers for the development of an initial triage scheme, of around one thousand (1000) isolates of the Bacillus thuringinesis belonging to the laboratories of the teams which make up this group of researchers. Subsequently bio-trials will be developed by different research groups within the team, aiming to confirm the molecular data and to define the products of the new cry genes found which, after cloning and sequencing, will be used for the construction of transgenetic plants which express resistance (due to the action of the products of the new cry genes discovered).
