Impact of reproductive illnesses on productivity of herds of bovines

Abstract

Subnutrition, debilitating diseases, infectious diseases and inadequated handling are the main couses for a low reproductive performance in bovine herds; with break of milk and meat production, due to abortion and infertility. On a livestock free from diseases, nutrition is the main factor of reproductive efficiency. When the nutritional necessities are fullf illed, the infections reproductive disorders turn to be one of the most important limiting factors of herd expansion, with implications on the international market. Diseases like brucelosis, leptospirosis, campylobacteriosis, trichomoniasis, IBR/IPV, BVD, among others, are still a problem for national livestocks, although real data are not known. Beef catlle researches have been renouced because of difficulties with the dealing and the man agement of these animals; so that we don't have reliable epidemiologic data. The objective of this study is to stablish a proposal for ordinated evaluation and conduct to serve as model in the field, considering basic informations such as regional prevalence and incidence of different diseases, nutritional status and handling, enviroamental and climatic conditions, so that, together with the economic analyses for a decision-making, contribute to solve the problems in a local level, to serve as parameters for regional conduct; studing the bovine herds in extensive rasing for meat production in Araçatuba region.
