Colony organization and patterns of reproduction in indigenous bees

Abstract

In the last decade our understanding of the genetic structure of insect societies advanced a great deal with the application of modern molecular markers. However, for the Meliponinae indigenous bees these techniques were not applied. The proposed work will use molecular markers for an estimate of kinship between colonies of Meliponinae. This data will be combined with out behavioral data, obtained and tested through detailed observation and experimentation. We will compare in parallel competition between queens and between queens and workers, varying the kinship between the queens. Theoretic models of Kin Selection developed after Hamilton will be able to be tested. (AU)
