Abstract

A change in health problems has been observed in most Latin American countries as the incidence of infant mortality, malnutrition, low birth weight, and infectious and parasitic diseases decreases, although, on the other hand, non-transmissible chronic diseases have increased among adults. In Brazil the current epidemiological profile is represented by the diseases of underdevelopment versus those of modem times. Thus, the country fares difficulties in promoting actions that will simultaneously contemplate the control of both transmissible and chronic non-transmissible diseases. Although information about this epidemiological profile is incomplete due to the scarcity of studies on this topic and to the unequal distribution in the country of the few existing studies, available data permit the observation of an increase in risk factors and in morbidity and mortality due to non-transmissible, chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular disorders and asthma. Although in developed countries there have been great advances in the understanding of the etiological factors related to these diseases, it is necessary to determine their origins in Brazil in order to propose adequate control measures. Some studies suggest the existence of a critical point of vulnerability during fetal life, while others suggest that an accumulation of events increases vulnerability to these diseases along life. The hypothesis is that impaired intrauterine growth is a determinant of postnatal growth and of the manifestation of risk factors for these diseases. Other factors that occur later in life (sedentary life style, obesity, impaired physical growth, inadequate diet, smoking habit, and others) and the socioeconomic conditions under which individuals live may accentuate this predisposition. Thus, the objective of the present study is to evaluate the relative importance of events related to pregnancy up to the beginning of adult life on physical growth and on the determination of a risk profile for cardiovascular diseases and asthma. In this respect, Ribeirão Preto, a town located in the state of São Paulo, is in a privileged condition for evaluating these hypotheses since it counts on reliable data about pregnancy and other phases of life for a cohort of children from singleton hospital births over a period of one year (June 1978 to May 1979) born to mothers residing in the municipality...
