Biogeochemistry of metals in aquatic environments and in the atmosphere. Part I: Chemical speciation of metals in rainwater

Abstract

In this project the proposal is to evaluate the chemical speciation of several metals (Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn and Al) and the concentrations of organic carbon dissolved in rainwater, with the objective of investigating some of the physical-chemical mechanisms which may alter metallic species in the atmosphere and, consequently, the species that will be deposited in the aquatic environment. The rain samples will be collected principally in Ribeirão Preto, and possible seasonal differences in the deposition of metals and organic matter will be investigated. The concentrations of metals in the dissolved phase and the lixiviatable metals (pH 1) of the particulate phase will be evaluated by cathodic stripping voltammetry. This study aims to provide a contribution to the clarification of the role of organic matter and of the photochemical reactions in the alterations of the physical- chemical properties of metals in the atmosphere.
