Abstract

Periodontal diseases are inflammatory processes involving periodontal tissues in humans and animals. These infections are produced by gram-negative anaerobes which display an ability to colonize and cause damage the host tissue. These disease are typically caused by endogenous agents such as A. actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and Fusobacterium nucleatum. In addition, P. gingivalis e P. intermedia are considered for their frequency and production of toxic substances. Several factors are produced by P. gingivalis helping to colonization and alveolar bone loss, and interfere with host immunological response. In the last years, periodontal lesions have been described in domestic animals, and periodontopathogens and the clinical characteristics were similar that those observed in humans. In dogs a high prevalence of periodontal lesions has been observed, such as gingival inflammation, ligaments destruction and alveolar bone loss. The goal of this study is to determine the occurrence of P. gingivalis and P. intermedia in periodontal patients and dogs; the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, the plasmid profile, molecular characterization of gene which mediate the collagenase, fimbriae, beta-lactamase production, and tetracycline resistance; genetic diversity by AP-PCR and Pulsed- field, and finally the chemiotactic activity and quantify cytokines from neutrophile induced for these organisms isolated from humans and animals.
