Evaluation of horses with occlusion of the jugular vein by ligature or induced thrombosis submitted to regional thrombolytic therapy with streptokinase, before, during and after exercise in treadmill

Abstract

Thrombophlebitis of the jugular vein is a frequently encountered condition in horses. To date, no studies about sanguineous and circulatory evaluation in horses during exercise with external jugular vein occlusion by ligature or thrombus have been publishied. There are no reports corcerning the treatment for jugular thrombophlebitis in horses using regional thrombolytic therapy with streptokinase. The purpose of this study is to document clinical, ultrasonographic, hemodinamic, hematimetric and hemogasometric changes in equines submitted to external jugular vein occlusion by unilateral and bilateral ligature and, by venous thrombus induced by extravascular administration of phenilbutazone. The evaluations will be performed before, during and after exercise in treadmilll. The experimental period will have two phases A and B. The horses will be separated in groups after the adptation period to treadmill. Phase A: groups GIA (control), GIIA (horses submitted to unilateral ligature of right external jugular vein) and GIIIA (horses submitted to bilateral ligature of right and left external jugular veins). Phase B: groups GIB, GIIB e GIIIB. At this phase, all the horses will be submitted to induction of aseptic jugular thrombophlebitis and diagnostic ultrasonography of the veins will be performed every 12 hours to identify the moment of vein occlusion. GIB, will be the control group (not treated); GIIB, will be treated with streptokinase 24 hours after ultrasonographic identification of occlusion (simulating acute disease); GIIIB, will be treated with streptokinase 72 hours after ultrasonographic identification of occlusion (simulating cronic disease). Thrombus dissolution will be followed by ultrasonography and an anticoagulant therapy with heparin will be realized to avoid new thrombus formation. All the groups will be submitted to exercise in treadmill to obtain blood samples during this activity. The results will be analysed by variance analysis test (ANOVA) using the software SAS (Statistical Analysis System). (AU)
