Experimental trial on the use of autologous cervical fascia and fat in the Reinke's space of pigs

Abstract

A good vocal quality is always associated to a perfect vibration of the lamina propria of the vocal folds (VF). Some diseases may affect the gliding between the layers of the lamina propria, leading to glottal insufficiency. The laminar structures of the vocal fold are formed by tissues with abundant cells surrounded by the extra-cellular matrix. The most important structure for the maintenance of the muco-ondulatory vibration is the Reinke's space. Many substances have been used in the aim of reconstruct the insufficient layer. One of the possibilities is the muscular fascia associated to fat. Aim: The current study try to evaluate the functional status and the tissue response of the vocal folds of the pig submitted to grafting of the Reinke’s space with fascia and fat. Material and Method: 24 pigs will be studied, divided in control and study group with 4 different follow-up periods - one week, one month, three months and six months. On e vocal fold will receive in its Reinke's space a graft composed of cervical fascia and fat. At the end of the follow-up period the animals will be sacrificed and the functional vibration evaluated by stroboscopy and the histologic tissue reaction observed. (AU)
