Abstract

The project has the aim to study the genesis and behavior of the cholesteatomas. The cholesteatomas can occur in the middle ear and in the external ear conduct. The middle ear cholesteatomas may be classified as primaries and secondaries, and seldom congenitals. They are characterized by high agressivity and skin migration from the meatus to the middle ear. They have high litical power causing intense bone destruction and leading to both middle ear chronic suppuration and hearing loss. The cholesteatomas may provoke endo-exocranial complications and even lead to death. The meatal cholesteatomas also have these characteristics, but they are restricted and less dangerous. Its treatment is surgical and mutilating (radical mastoidectomy). The cholesteatoma is very frequent in our country and causes an enormous cost to its treatment. Little is konwn about its origin and agressive behavior, but recent studies show they can be related to the presence of local cytokins and cytokeratins. (AU)
