Hydrogenation of dimethyl adipate at presence of pillared clay based catalysts

Abstract

This project intends to evaluate the catalytic activity of pillared clays impregnated with active and promoted metals, on the hydrogenation of dimethyl adipate. Several products can be obtained, amongst which the diols, that are used as raw material in the synthesis of polyesters, polyurethanes, varnishes, adhesives, fragrances, pharmaceuticals and, more recently, in the biodegradable polymer production. These materials can be obtained from the catalytic hydrogenation of acid and dicarboxylic esters. However, given the complexity of these reactions, the development of selective catalysts is essential. In this context, the heterogeneous catalysis is a very promising alternative. Considering an extensive series of research approaching catalytic reactions of hydrogenation in laboratory LDPC - FEQ - UNICAMP, we verify that monometallic catalytic are little efficient with regard to the selective attack of the carbonyl function and that the selectivity of these systems can be modified by the insertion of another metal, considered inactive in hydrogenation, as the Sn. The use of supports as pillared clays, can significantly modify the activity of metals and the distribution of products, since some form selectivity must be obtained with the use of this type of structure, as well as alterations promoted by its superficial acidity.
