Abstract

The aim of this project is to evaluate, using numeric simulation and experimental tests, the residual stress profiles induced by the process of shot-peening on a SAE 1070 steel plate. The numeric computational simulation will be developed using the commercial code of finite-element method ANSYS. The simulation of multiple impacts made it necessary to build a 3D finite-element model of the plate. The high-speed impact, the non-linearity of the steel mechanical properties, the strain rate sensitive material, hardened cast-steel shot and the contact elements are, among other aspects, taken into account in the modelling.In the experimental part the test specimens will be made of SAE 1070 steel, usually used in industry for spring production, and submitted to different shot-peening Almen intensities. The residual stress profiles generated in the surface of the test specimens will be obtained, for electric strain gages, using the Hole Drilling Technique adapted to shot-peening.The experimental measurements of residual stresses will validate the numeric simulation approach, extending the results for several applications. It is intended, additionally, to create the bases for a technical procedure in order to find the residual stress profiles for any other studied material. (AU)
