Abstract

Graves orbitopathy is an autoimmune condition characterized by restrictive extraocular myopathy, upper eyelid retraction and proptosis. The combination of eye displacement and upper eyelid retraction put at risk the ocular surface and the patients affected usually have exposure keratitis. On the other hand, the mechanisms involved in the upper eyelid retraction have not been fully understood and there are no studies on the dynamics of the retracted upper eyelid. This main aim of the present research is to quantify the relationship between the upper eyelid saccades and the blinks of patients with Graves upper eyelid retraction utilizing the magnetic search coil technique. The results of this study will allow the isolation of the passive and active components of the upper eyelid retraction in Graves orbitopathy. (AU)
