Abstract

Nurses' clinical role has been a core component in nursing literature and also in day-by-day nurses' discourse. In spite of that, the concept of nurses' clinical role is not clearly defined in the literature. The aim of this study is to develop the concept of nurses' clinical role. A qualitative based descriptive study, guided by principles and methods of grounded theory and concept development, was proposed to capture the major features of the concept of nurses' clinical role according to the actual experiences of nurses in care settings. Participants will be baccalaureate nurses, who perform nursing care in an academic hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. The sample size is not previously defined. It will be set along with data collection and analysis. While collected and analyzed data will point out the need for more data, participants will be included in the sample. Data collection procedures will be observation of nurses' performance in a typical day followed by a semi-structured interview guided by a generic question on their clinical role experience. The major purpose of the observation is to integrate participants and researcher to base the interviews, when needed, in shared experiences. Observation data will be documented by the researcher, and the interviews will be audio-recorded, and then entirely transcribed. Data transcribed will be analyzed and re-analyzed, generating codes and categories in a continuous and evolving process to develop a model to represent a clinical role concept. The developed model will be presented to the participants in order to validate its features and structure. (AU)
